Who Said Anything About Dieting?

Posted by Heather

My weight is a very accurate reflection of my food intake and laziness. When I eat Crunch Wrap Supremes minus the beef from Taco Bell, nachos with my ladies from El Torito, sushi galore on $5 Sundays, girl scout cookies and the whole bag of salt and vinegar chips...I get fat!

And why would I eat like that?

  1. It tastes really good (like, really, really good).
  2. I am an emotional eater. I eat when I'm stressed or bored or generally seeking to feed some psychological hunger.
While I would like to blame my eating habits on stress, the fact of the matter is I use that excuse way to often. I do not display stress normally but instead prefer to crawl up in my bed, with munchies, and try to pretend the source of it all will just go away. That really just amounts to more stress from putting things off and generally acting like a slacker. Something needs to change. Calorie counting really does work wonders, problem is Im freaking hungry! And working out is over-rated. I do yoga 2x a week but the other days Im damn tired. Can't the fat cut me a break?

So this time around, Im going to try lifestyle changes. It will be one thing to lose weight, but I think that will be a secondary affect to my attitude being more optimistic, my work ethic getting better, my work out habits being more consistant, and my sleeping habits being less drawn out. I need to actually start setting my alarm and listening to it, not going to work in scrubs and pajamas but putting the effort in to making myself look better (which means feel better), actually going to yoga with a clear mind and ready to work out, and not being so damn pessimistic about all my experiments that I will them to not work. I need to get off my butt and stop feeling sorry for myself and make some changes!

Don't get me wrong; I'm not being completely self-deprecating. I have plenty of healthy habits (e.g., like drinking primarily water, eating lots of fruit and veggies, avoiding heavily processed foods, and generally staying away from fast food, most of the time).

But I have fallen prey to some bad habits these past few months: eating out too frequently (and eating too much), eating girl scout cookies every night, and then going for seconds, and not exercising consistently or enough.

I've read that one should eat healthily about 85% of the time. If I eat three meals a day, seven days a week, for a total of 21 meals, then three of those meals don't have to be healthy (that's about 14%). Technically, I could eat nachos with the girls, make a fast food run, and throw in some $5 sushi and still be okay as long as I eat well for every other meal (which means no unhealthy leftovers for lunch!). I also need to limit my girl scout cookie intake to once per week. Plus, I need to commit to consistent exercise.

Of course it's easier said than done. It takes more time and thought for me to be healthy, but it's worth it. So here is what is on the menu today:
Breakfast - 1c honey nut cherrios (yum!) and 1/2c vanilla soy milk (yum yum!) = 100calories
Lunch - vegetable indian stirfry consisting of 1/4 white potato 50 cal, tikka masala sauce 120 cal, broccoli 20cal, tofu 90cal, and mushrooms 20cal. served with 1/2c brown rice and slice of naan, total of 280cal = 580 cal
Snack = yogurt 90cal
Dinner = chickenless stuffed breast with 1/2c brown rice and a salad = 500cal

That's just a little over my 1200calories/day diet. Im okay with that.

Here's to a skinnier/healthier me!

i have been eating mindlessly lately, too. it's gotta stop!! calorie counting works for me also but i find if i'm working out i have to eat more than 1200! i try for 1600. of course yoga won't burn as many calories as weight training or cardio or calisthenics so maybe 1200 would be okay. good luck!

yeah on yoga days I eat 1400, but most of the time I try to stick around 1200. Its hard but after a few weeks I get used to it. I think I am going to add in a running day complete with ab and arm work, then I will allow myself 1600.

i don't think sushi is unhealthy... just cut out the rice.

trust me, consider eating a quasi-low-carb diet. it certainly worked for me! and exercising does wonders. get some friends and go for a jog every so often, chat and gossip away while the calories burn off!
