Vows

Posted by Heather

It probably doesn't come as a surprise to all of you that I have been thinking a lot about vows recently. Its a powerful word, one that represents whole hearted commitment and follow through. I picture myself at our wedding, and what the vows are that I want to promise Ektor for our lives. Of course there are the generic, "I promise to love you in sickness and health 'til death do us part", but isn't that unnecessarily said in just the act of marriage? I cant say I made this vow to Ektor the moment I met him or even fell in love with him, but I definitely made this vow to him the second I knew that he was the one for me. So saying that vow isn't really that much of a vow for me. What about the little things like "I vow to always hold your hair back when you are sick" or "I vow to never bitch when you watch sports on Sundays"?

So anyway, that got me thinking a lot about vows. This weekend, Ektor and I decided to "pretend" we were married. We got out the rings that we will be exchanging come March 28th and slipped them on eachother's fingers complete with a couple vows that I thought were more realistic. Ektor' was "I vow to agree with everything you say" (Im a lucky girl right?) and my vow was "I vow to not be a passenger driver". The next day our vows were "I vow to have a fun day instead of staying inside and sleeping" (that was mine, I like to sleep) and his was "I vow to not rush you while looking at picture frames for our house".
Today while preparing for Ektor to leave back to NY, we had to take off our rings and put them back in their box. But even though the shiny gold symbol of our commitment for eachother is back in its waiting place, our vows to eachother were not just practice...they were preparation for our life together. All vows require practice and patience.
So with that said, Im still working on my vows to Ektor for our big day. Im glad that we get our weekends of practice though.

I made the comment to a 3rd grader that I tutor that a good writer makes it easier for the reader to imagine. The way you write, Heather, is wonderful! So many times I get teary-eyed when I read your writing, and today is no exception! I loved what you wrote about your vows :-) And...by the way...you'd be just as good of an English teacher as you would a teacher of Science! Boy, you are blessed with so many wonderful qualities!
