The Yankees were eliminated in the AL Division Series on Saturday, marking the second straight season in which New York was sent home in the first round of the postseason. Torre's Yankees are now 3-10 in their last 13 playoff games, dating back to the four-game collapse against the Red Sox in the 2004 ALDS.
A report in the New York Daily News on Sunday indicated that Torre would be dismissed, with Lou Piniella set to take over as the Yankees' new manager.
The two first-year coaches weren't the only ones to support Torre, as the handful of players who came to clean out their lockers at Yankee Stadium were surprised to hear that his job was in jeopardy.
"You can't hold him accountable for why we came up short," Scott Proctor said. "The players just have to do the job. He just sits on the bench and fills out the lineup card. It's our job to get the job done. I sure hope he's back.
"Ultimately, you look at the way things happened, and it's our responsibility, the reason that we weren't playing better than we did," Phillips said. "When you hear anything like that about him, you do a double take. We were as motivated and focused going into this thing starting Day 1 in Spring Training, and that hasn't changed a bit."
